Riverside County, California – A devastating accident on Gilman Springs Road in Riverside County on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of six people and left four others hospitalized while also igniting a brush fire that led to multiple road closures.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the fatal Riverside County accident occurred at 2:19 p.m. when a driver attempted to pass on the right shoulder, lost control, hit a guardrail, and swerved into oncoming traffic. The resulting collision involved four vehicles, all of which were engulfed in flames upon CHP’s arrival.
Tragically, the driver who caused the crash was found dead at the scene, and his front passenger was taken to a hospital with severe injuries. In one of the vehicles pushed off the road, a fire broke out, claiming the lives of three passengers—two children and one adult.
The exact cause of death for the other two victims remains under investigation, but all six were declared dead at the scene.
Firefighters managed the resulting brush fire, which spread to 3.74 acres. A good Samaritan with a tractor helped to create a perimeter, preventing the flames from spreading further. Road closures were implemented, with eastbound traffic diverted to Bridge Street and westbound traffic rerouted to Highway 79.
The four survivors, who were transported to a hospital, sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe, according to CAL FIRE and Riverside County Fire Department officials.
