According to the Sacramento Fire Department, the impact was so severe that three vehicles caught fire, complicating rescue efforts.
Two people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the accident was caused by a distracted driver in a pickup truck traveling east on I-80.
