Walnut Creek, California – Early Thursday morning, August 1st, a tragic car accident claimed the life of an 18-year-old driver and left his 18-year-old passenger injured near downtown Walnut Creek.
Walnut Creek Police Lieutenant Jeff Slater reported that the teenagers’ vehicle crashed on Ygnacio Valley Road, between Broadway and N. Civic Drive, around 1 a.m.
Due to the ongoing investigation, this busy area will remain closed for much of the day. Police described the incident as a “high-speed crash.”
Joseph Jarosch, an employee at a nearby convenience store, recounted that he was working the register when he heard the loud sound of a car “screeching” down the street and crashing into a pole.
When he went outside to see what had happened, he found the entire block without power, with electrical wires sparking, and the front end of a black Honda completely wrecked.
Police confirmed that only the two 18-year-olds were in the car at the time of the accident. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, is expected to survive his injuries, according to Lt. Slater.
