Tragedy Strikes on the 14 Freeway in Agua Dulce Canyon Road

[Agua Dulce Canyon Road, CA] On Sunday morning, tragedy occurred on the 14 Freeway in Agua Dulce Canyon Road when a man from Palmdale was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to run across the highway. At approximately 12:13 a.m., the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office received a call regarding the incident.

Upon arriving at the scene, CHP officers discovered Juan Avalos, 44, of Palmdale, had been hit by a 2022 Mazda MX5 as he ran across the No. 2 and No. 3 lanes of the northbound 14 Freeway. Avalos had been involved in a separate traffic crash on the southbound 14 Agua Dulce Canyon Road off-ramp prior to attempting to run across the freeway.

It is unknown at this point if Avalos was impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of his death, according to CHP. A Sig-Alert was issued for the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 lanes of the northbound 14 Freeway, and was reopened by 4:44 a.m. Sunday. The CHP Newhall area office is currently investigating the crash and witnesses are encouraged to contact them at (661) 600-1600 if they have any information that could help in the investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Avalos’ family during this difficult time. We urge everyone to use caution when driving and crossing highways, as an accident such as this could have been avoided.

The Agua Dulce Canyon Road accident serves as a reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike and how important it is to take proper precautions when driving or crossing highways. No one should have to face a situation like this, yet it can happen in the blink of an eye.
