Redding, California – The Redding Police Department (RPD) has provided additional information about an accident involving a train and a semi-truck that occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly before noon, the police received an emergency call about a collision between a train and a semi-truck at the intersection of Breslauer Way and State Route 273. According to the police investigation, the semi-truck, operated by a 25-year-old driver from Washington, attempted to cross the tracks of SR-273 at Breslauer Way. However, the trailer of the semi-truck got stuck on the tracks.
The driver of the semi-truck struggled to free the trailer trapped on the tracks, but in the process, blocked both the train tracks and the roadway. The semi-truck was carrying a large Caterpillar tractor on a low-height trailer, which is lower than most trailers.
The situation became critical as a Union Pacific train approached traveling southbound. Despite the efforts of the semi-truck driver, the train was unable to brake or stop in time, resulting in a devastating collision with the semi-truck and the large tractor.
As a result of the impact, the large tractor was thrown off the trailer and struck the railroad crossing arm controls, causing significant damage. Witnesses at the scene reported to the police that the semi-truck had been stuck at the railroad crossing for a short period of time, and no call had been made to notify Union Pacific about the situation before the collision.
Due to the damage to the crossing arm, the police have announced that the intersection at Breslauer Way and SR-273 will remain closed to traffic for several days. Currently, vehicles are prohibited from crossing Breslauer Way from SR-273 and Eastside Road. Motorists are strongly advised to use alternate routes such as Wyndham Lane and South Bonnyview Road to access Breslauer Way while necessary repairs are carried out.
