Maui Wildfire Update: Lahaina Residents to Get Supervised Visits to Fire-stricken Properties [Lahaina, Maui]

[Lahaina, Maui] In the aftermath of the United States’ deadliest wildfire in over a century, Maui authorities have announced an initiative for residents and business owners from the Lahaina Wildfire Disaster zone. Starting September 25th, they will be allowed supervised visits to their properties that were engulfed by the catastrophic blaze nearly five weeks ago.

Darryl Oliveira, the Interim Administrator for the Maui Emergency Management Agency, revealed this initiative during a recent press conference. Emphasizing the dual objectives of the visits – safety and closure – Oliveira extended his gratitude to the Lahaina community for their continued patience and understanding throughout this tragic period.

How The Visits Will Work

To ensure the safety and systematic process of these visits, individuals need to apply for a pass and undergo a briefing with officials. The first set of zones eligible for the visits will be announced on Monday, based on areas cleared by the Environmental Protection Agency.

As Oliveira pointed out, the enormity of the devastation could be emotionally taxing. “It’s paramount to mentally prepare the residents, ensuring they aren’t further traumatized by the sight of their burned homes and businesses,” he remarked.

The local CBS Honolulu affiliate, KGMB-TV, reported that during these visits, people would be equipped with protective gear, like respirators and special suits, to safeguard them against toxic ash. Additionally, provisions like water, shade, portable toilets, and healthcare providers will be on standby. The focus will also be on instructing residents on carefully sifting through debris to search for salvageable items without agitating toxic dust.

However, these visits are exclusively for those who either lived in or owned businesses in the affected zones. Others won’t be permitted due to safety concerns.

The Road to Recovery

Oliveira added that post these visits, the Army Corps of Engineers would begin the massive task of debris removal, giving residents their much-needed closure.

In a post on social platform X (formerly known as Twitter) on the latest Maui wildfire update, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green addressed the issue of displaced victims. Efforts are being channeled to provide them more permanent housing, including longer-term rentals and extended Airbnb stays, targeting an 18-month housing solution. The Governor’s objective is to streamline accommodations, such as reducing the number of hotels, to facilitate the efficient provision of services.

The fire, which began on August 8, has left an indelible mark on Lahaina. Engulfing homes, businesses, art galleries, and more, it resulted in an estimated damage of $5.5 billion.

Affected property and business owners from the Lahaina disaster may be entitled to financial compensation for their profound losses. Don’t delay! Call Farahi Law Firm today and explore your rights for rightful compensation.
