Sacramento, California – A tragic accident in North Natomas on Monday morning claimed the life of a man in his 60s after he was struck by a Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) shuttle bus. The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Club Center and Banfield drives, according to Sacramento police.
The circumstances leading up to the SacRT shuttle bus accident remain unclear, but first responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The RT Smart Ride shuttle bus driver remained on-site and is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
City Councilmember Lisa Kaplan, who represents the area and serves on the Sacramento Regional Transit board, expressed her sorrow in a statement. “Words cannot adequately address the heartache and tragedy that this accident has caused,” she said, offering her deepest condolences to the victim’s family.
Kaplan’s office issued a press release noting that she has communicated with the executive director of Sacramento Regional Transit and the city manager to discuss potential safety improvements to the roadway where this SacRT shuttle bus accident occurred. This location has been the site of a previous tragedy earlier this year when a grandfather was fatally struck while riding his bicycle.
In light of these events, Kaplan urged the community to prioritize safety while driving. “Every day when we get in our cars, we need to put our phones down,” she said.
“We need to slow down and be reminded that getting somewhere one minute faster isn’t worth the death of an individual. We must look out for each other, our kids, our families, and our community.”
Our hearts go out to the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Tragedies in pedestrian accidents like these remind us all to be vigilant and mindful on the road, as every action we take can impact our lives and those around us.
