(Palm Springs, CA) A devastating car accident on Interstate 10 in Riverside County claimed the lives of two young girls and one woman, with seven other people sustaining injuries.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning around 7:30 a.m. in Whitewater, a city located about 15 minutes northwest of Palm Springs. The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene east of Interstate 10 on Haugen-Lehmann Way.
Preliminary investigations indicated that a 31-year-old man from Indio, traveling eastbound on the highway northwest of Haugen-Lehmann Way in the third lane in a black 2002 Tesla, and a 39-year-old man driving a red 2001 Chevrolet Suburban in the same direction but in the second lane, collided with each other for an unknown reason.
The collision caused the driver of the Suburban to lose control, crashing into the center divider and causing the vehicle to overturn, ejecting six occupants from the vehicle. A seventh occupant was partially ejected.
A 10-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl, and a 31-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Four other passengers, including a 3-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old teenager, suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to the hospital, according to authorities.
The driver of the Tesla sustained moderate injuries, while the other driver suffered minor injuries.
Alcohol or drugs are currently ruled out as significant factors in the fatal crash near Palm Springs Claims, and authorities urge anyone with relevant information about the accident to come forward.
