Crash in Gilroy Leaves One Dead, Another Severely Injured

Gilroy, California — A tragic multi-vehicle crash in Gilroy on Thursday afternoon resulted in one fatality and left another individual with serious injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. at the intersection of Monterey Road and Live Oak Avenue. CHP reports that Daniel Arendt, 45, was driving a Freightliner eastbound in the fast lane, preparing to turn left onto northbound Monterey Road. At the same time, a 35-year-old Honda driver was traveling southbound on Monterey Road in the fast lane, approaching the same intersection.

The Honda driver, whose name was not released, failed to stop at a red light and collided with the Freightliner. The impact caused the Honda to veer into northbound lanes, where it struck a Jeep driven by Leonel Orozco, 47, head-on. Both vehicles overturned, scattering debris that struck a Ford driven by 37-year-old Ricky Reyna.

Orozco sustained major injuries and was hospitalized, while Reyna and Arendt escaped uninjured. The Honda driver succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

Investigators do not suspect alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash. Witnesses are encouraged to contact CHP Officer E. Valesquez at (408) 427-0700.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased. To those recovering from injuries, we sincerely wish for a swift and complete recovery.
