In an unfortunate incident on Thursday morning on Highway 70 in Sutter County, a United States Marshal Task Force agent was injured in a rear-end collision while providing assistance to motorists involved in another crash.
The accident occurred around 7 a.m. when the California Highway Patrol received multiple calls reporting a collision between two vehicles on Highway 70, just south of Nicolaus Avenue.
According to Officer Brian Danielson, spokesperson for the Yuba-Sutter CHP office, the driver of a white SUV apparently fell asleep at the wheel while traveling northbound. As a result, the vehicle violently collided with the rear of a semi-truck.
At that moment, a United States Marshal agent was driving in the opposite lane but noticed the accident and made a quick and courageous decision. Without hesitation, the agent made a U-turn through an opening in the highway’s center divider to come to the aid of those affected by the crash.
Unfortunately, while attempting to provide assistance, a second accident occurred, catching everyone involved off guard. The Marshal’s vehicle was rear-ended by a white sedan, whose driver failed to notice the deceleration that had occurred due to the previous crash.
The sound of the second collision was recorded by a dispatcher in a call reporting the first crash, documenting the incident at 7:05 a.m. Immediately, emergency teams and rescue services rushed to the scene to provide medical attention to the injured and ensure the safety of the area.
The driver involved in the first crash was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. On the other hand, both the United States Marshal agent and the driver from the second crash suffered minor injuries, fortunately not severe.
