Accident at Devil’s Slide: Three People Died in Cliff Plunge

CALIFORNIA – In a tragic incident that occurred last Friday, July 26, a third victim was found dead on Saturday, July 27, in a vehicle that plunged off a cliff on State Route 1 at Devil’s Slide in San Mateo County, according to a spokesperson from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

On Saturday, authorities managed to recover the vehicle, allowing the reopening of both directions of Highway 1.

The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Friday when a gray two-door sedan veered off the road and fell off a cliff, south of the Tom Lantos tunnels. The severity of the accident required the intervention of a CAL FIRE rescue team, which descended with ropes to the vehicle to assess the situation.

During the initial inspection, rescuers confirmed the presence of two deceased individuals inside the vehicle. Subsequently, a third victim was discovered on Saturday, increasing the tragic toll of the accident.

Caleb Benefiel, a spokesperson for the CHP, indicated that the accident is still under investigation. Authorities are working to determine the exact causes of the accident at Devil’s Slide and whether any additional factors contributed to the tragedy.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident to provide answers and ensure necessary measures are implemented to prevent future accidents.
