5 Freeway Shooting Causes Major Traffic in Boyle Heights

Boyle Heights, Los Angeles – A deadly 5 Freeway shooting on Thursday afternoon led to a major traffic backup and left one person dead and another hospitalized. The incident, which authorities believe stemmed from a road-rage dispute, occurred around 4:11 p.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway near Lorena Street, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

CHP Lt. Bob Purvis reported that the shooting followed a road-rage altercation between the occupants of a gold-colored Cadillac sedan and a dark-colored Dodge Durango. After the initial confrontation, the Cadillac was involved in a rear-end collision with another vehicle. Following the crash, suspects from the Durango exited their vehicle and opened fire on the Cadillac.

In an attempt to escape, the Cadillac driver turned the vehicle in the wrong direction on the freeway, colliding with additional cars. The passenger in the Cadillac, who was shot multiple times, tragically died at the scene. The driver was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery for their injuries.

The suspects in the Dodge Durango fled the scene and remain at large. CHP is actively investigating the case and is urging anyone with information to come forward.

This Boyle Heights accident caused significant traffic delays, with miles-long backups and all northbound lanes being diverted to the Calzona Street off-ramp. The freeway has since been reopened.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that road rage can escalate into. Personal injury and wrongful death caused by reckless behavior on the road are avoidable, and we hope for a swift recovery for the injured driver. We encourage drivers to stay calm and composed in tense situations to prevent such senseless acts of violence.
