Adelanto, California – A tragic accident has shaken the community of Adelanto, California, as a 12-year-old child lost their life after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street.
The collision occurred shortly after 7 in the morning near the intersection of Jonathan and Seneca streets, prompting an immediate response from the Serious Accident Investigation Team of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The agency communicated this incident through its social media channels.
The vehicle that struck the child remained at the accident scene. Despite efforts by bystanders, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the young child sadly passed away at the scene.
As of now, the authorities have not disclosed the child’s identity, but it has been revealed that the victim was a sixth-grade student attending the Melva Davis Academy.
In response to this incident, the Adelanto Elementary School District dispatched representatives to the accident scene on Monday morning. Superintendent Michael Krause stated that the school bus had not yet arrived when the child crossed the street and was struck.
In light of this tragedy, Krause expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety of students at street crossings and bus stops. “We will be evaluating all of our bus stops, working with the city of Adelanto to evaluate signage and our pedestrian crossings, as well as making sure that we are aware of anything we can do to make our students’ crossings as safe as possible,” Krause declared.
Arnold Vásquez, a long-time resident of the area, revealed that he had expressed his concerns to city authorities multiple times regarding safety on that road. Vásquez shared his anguish, stating, “My son used to take the bus right across the street, and nobody had any consideration. People were going 50, to 60 miles per hour back and forth while the bus was there loading children. It’s one of my biggest fears that a child would get hit by a car one day, and that’s exactly what happened here.”
So far, investigators have not determined whether speed was a contributing factor in this tragic accident. The community awaits more details about the circumstances surrounding this incident.
