San Francisco, California – On Monday, October 9, 2023, six people were injured after a cable car abruptly came to a halt on a steep hill in San Francisco to avoid colliding with a car. The incident occurred at the intersection of Washington and Taylor Streets, located in the Nob Hill neighborhood.
The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. when a cable car operating in the city was forced to activate its emergency brake to avoid a collision with a car that was in the middle of the intersection. According to San Francisco Fire Department Lieutenant Mariano Elias, the cable car operator made this decision to prevent an imminent collision.
Initially, it was reported that seven people were injured in the incident. However, fire officials later clarified that only six passengers suffered minor injuries during the incident. Passengers inside the car also experienced mild injuries due to the cable car’s sudden stop.
An eyewitness at the scene described the car involved in the intersection as a black Toyota Prius. By activating the emergency brake, the cable car averted what could have been a serious accident at a busy San Francisco intersection.
