Death Valley, California – On Saturday, October 28, 2023, Death Valley National Park in California was the scene of an unusual traffic accident when a tarantula was crossing CA-190, triggering a series of unexpected events.
According to the National Park Service, Swiss tourists had to make an emergency maneuver to avoid running over the arachnid, resulting in a 24-year-old Canadian motorcyclist colliding with the rear of their rented RV.
After the incident, the injured motorcyclist was transported to Desert View Hospital in Pahrump by a park service ambulance. At this time, no information has been provided about their condition.
Despite the chaos, the tarantula, as indicated by the Park Service, managed to cross the road without suffering any harm.
Superintendent Mike Reynolds, the first park service employee to arrive at the scene, took the opportunity to remind drivers of the importance of exercising caution when navigating the park’s steep hills, highlighting the risks of the terrain and the presence of wildlife.
The Park Service also shared fascinating information about the behavior of tarantulas, noting that these creatures spend most of their lives in underground burrows and that it is common to spot them in the fall when males come out in search of mates. Additionally, it was emphasized that tarantulas, despite their intimidating appearance, are not aggressive and their bite is comparable to that of a bee, not lethal to humans.
This accident in Death Valley, however unusual and curious it may seem, not only caused a great scare to those involved but also material damages to a rented vehicle that must be covered by the tourists, as well as medical expenses to cover the injuries of the motorcyclist.
It is impressive to see how a small animal can cause disastrous consequences. Just as a simple tarantula can cause chaos, wildlife in California areas can bring about accidents with injuries, and in devastating cases, the death of drivers and passengers who avoid hitting or hurting these animals.
If you or a loved one have been involved in a similar accident in California, you have the right to seek justice for the injuries and damages suffered. While it is impossible to hold wildlife accountable for these accidents, it is possible to hold the government or regional spaces accountable for the care and monitoring of the roads.
