The family of Chanthy Philavong, a 93-year-old woman, gathered in front of her home to commemorate their beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who lost her life in a devastating dog attack in Modesto.
Affectionately known as Grandma Chanthy, this woman was an embodiment of sweetness, love, and vitality. Her smile had the power to brighten any space, and her legacy lives on in her family.
Chanthy Philavong was not only a mother to five children but also played a significant role in the lives of her 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her generosity and dedication were unwavering.
Neighbor Janiece Dendulk shared her experience with FOX40.com and described the fateful event that changed their lives in just 80 seconds. On August 31st, two imposing Cane Corso dogs approached Philavong’s doorstep.
Dendulk tried to keep the dogs under control, but suddenly, they managed to escape. What followed were heart-wrenching screams. They found the family matriarch on the ground, being attacked by the fierce canines. Janiece Dendulk did everything she could, throwing pots, shoes, and anything she could find to try to save her and bring her back to the safety of her home.
The brave Chanthy Philavong was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, she passed away the next day due to the severe injuries sustained in the attack.
Currently, the dogs responsible for the attack are in custody at an animal shelter. The police have not yet decided whether they will be euthanized, a decision that is pending.
Chanthy Philavong’s loved ones traveled from out of state to be together and celebrate the life of their family matriarch. While the family declined to make statements in front of the cameras, they have maintained the tradition of honoring her daily before the funeral services that will take place in the coming days.
The terrible tragedy with dogs that led to the beloved grandmother’s death has left a significant scar on both her family and the Modesto community.
