Perris Woman Killed in I-215 Crash Caused by Alleged DUI

Perris, California — A 26-year-old woman tragically lost her life in an I-215 crash over the weekend involving an alleged drunk driver, leaving her family and community mourning an indescribable loss.

Jocelyn Mendoza, a proud UC Irvine graduate nearing completion of her master’s degree in education, was remembered for her vibrant and compassionate spirit. Her dedication to teaching left a lasting impact on countless lives.

The collision occurred around 12:20 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and the southbound I-215 offramp. Mendoza was driving a Toyota sedan when it was struck by a Dodge truck allegedly driven by Ivan Jerome Simmons, 23, of Perris. Mendoza sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities reported that Simmons fled the crash site but was apprehended nearby. He now faces charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run causing death, and DUI causing bodily injury. He remains in custody with bail set at $1 million.

Mendoza’s grieving family described her as intelligent, kind, and full of life. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist her parents with funeral expenses and other costs during this devastating time.
