CRENSHAW, LOS ANGELES – A heartbreaking hit-and-run in Crenshaw shocked community on Thursday night, claiming the life of a respected 85-year-old grandfather. Marco Tulio Santizo, along with his 41-year-old grandson, Marco Tulio Herrera Santizo, was returning home after a day’s work.
Around 9:30 p.m., while crossing West Boulevard, they were struck by a hit-and-run driver traveling east on West Santa Rosalia Drive in a dark-colored vehicle. The impact was devastating, and the driver of the responsible vehicle quickly fled the scene, leaving the victims amidst chaos and uncertainty.
The family of the victims was devastated by the news. Walter Arias, a close family member, shared with sadness, “They were tireless workers. All we do is work and take care of the family, in a nutshell. They were coming back home, and suddenly this happened.”
A passing driver witnessed the heart-wrenching scene of the two men lying on the street and immediately alerted emergency services. Paramedics arrived swiftly and transported both men to the nearest hospital, where, unfortunately, the grandfather could not survive his injuries.
The grandson, Marco Tulio Herrera Santizo, is in stable condition but is understandably shaken by the accident’s impact. He doesn’t remember anything about the incident at the hospital, which has plunged the family into a painful dilemma. Maira Arias, another family member, expressed with anguish, “He doesn’t know that my dad is dead. How do I tell him?”
The family and the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw community are deeply troubled by the lack of answers. The video cameras in the area were off at the time of the accident, making it difficult to identify the suspect.
