Driver Arrested for DUI After a Chico Crash

Chico, California – A driver is facing DUI charges following a major crash early Thursday morning, February 15, 2024, in Chico. The accident resulted in the demolition of a traffic light and sent two vehicles careening into the parking lot of a local business.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Walnut and W. 3rd St. in Chico. According to Chico Police authorities, the incident unfolded as they were responding to reports of a vehicle driving recklessly in the downtown area.

A police officer attempted to stop the suspected vehicle on W. 3rd Street. However, the offending driver disregarded the red light at the intersection of Walnut Street and ended up veering off the road, causing the violent crash.

The Chico crash destroyed the traffic light and pedestrian crossing signal, as well as significant property damage in the parking lot of Dragon Tobacco. The Chrysler sedan involved in the incident collided with a minivan belonging to Dragon Tobacco, leaving both vehicles just meters away from the building. The minivan, upon impact, overturned and ended up upside down.

Chico police proceeded to arrest the driver identified as Connor Duggan, 24, for driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of the accident, and reckless driving. Additionally, Ian Lochtefeld, 27, was identified as a passenger in the vehicle.

Surveillance footage captured the moment the silver sedan was traveling westbound on 3rd Street, crashing violently into the traffic light and entering the parking lot. Two individuals quickly fled the vehicle after the accident but were apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter.
