In a report from the San Francisco Fire Department, it has been revealed that two autonomous taxis blocked an ambulance on its way to a hospital, possibly contributing to the patient’s death. This incident occurred on August 14, just four days after state regulators approved the 24/7 availability of autonomous taxi services in the city.
The report details that emergency response teams arrived at the scene of a severe pedestrian accident around 10:45 PM. However, the situation became complicated when Cruise autonomous vehicles occupied two lanes of a four-lane one-way street. This forced a police vehicle in a separate route to move aside to make way for the ambulance and allow it to exit.
Part of the official report states: “The patient was prepared for transport with potentially life-threatening injuries, but we could not leave the scene initially because the Cruise vehicles were not moving.” This delay, however minimal, contributed to an adverse outcome for the patient.
In contrast, Cruise representatives disagree with the SFFD report and claim that their fleet vehicles did not in any way obstruct medical treatment. According to the company, as soon as the victim was loaded into the ambulance, it left the scene immediately and was never impeded.
Despite months of opposition from many residents and city officials, California regulators approved the public use of autonomous taxi services like Cruise and Waymo in San Francisco last month. However, within days of the green light, it was reported that autonomous vehicles disregarded stop signs, caused lengthy traffic jams, and recklessly avoided pedestrians.
This incident with autonomous taxis in San Francisco raises important questions about the coexistence of autonomous vehicles in urban environments and their ability to handle emergency situations efficiently. Authorities and automotive companies will need to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of the community in these critical scenarios.
