In a shocking incident outside Roosevelt High School, almost a dozen teenagers suffered injuries when a truck plowed into a bus stop on Wednesday afternoon. The crash, which took place around 3:30 pm near Tulare and Cedar avenues, is now under investigation as a hit-and-run.
According to Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer, the driver behind the wheel, a 16-year-old, was driving the truck at excessive speeds when he lost control and crashed into a FAX bus stop. At the time, the bus stop was crowded with around 20 students awaiting their ride home.
In the aftermath, 11 students were hit by the out-of-control vehicle and were rushed to local hospitals. Fortunately, all injured students are currently stable with non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the crash, instead of assisting the injured or waiting for authorities, the teen driver and his 14-year-old sister, who was accompanying him in the truck, hastily fled the scene on foot.
Shortly thereafter, an unidentified family member collected the two teenagers and attempted to leave the area.
However, swift action by the Fresno Police Department led to the intercept and arrest of the 16-year-old driver when officers stopped the family member’s vehicle nearby.
Cedar Avenue has been temporarily closed at Tulare and is expected to remain so for several hours as the investigation unfolds.
Residents and parents are understandably shaken by the Fresno hit and run, demanding a thorough investigation and urging for stricter monitoring of underage driving in the area.
