CALIFORNIA – Driving under the influence (DUI) remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the United States.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 37 people die each day in the USA due to drunk driving-related accidents. This translates to one death every 39 minutes because of this road safety issue.
In 2022, there were 13,524 deaths related to drunk driving accidents, accounting for nearly 30% of all traffic accident fatalities in the country. The statistics also show that in the same year, around 2,337 people were killed in alcohol-related accidents where the driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was between .01 and .07. The maximum illegal BAC in almost all states is .08.
Moreover, the NHTSA reports that approximately 1.5 million drivers are arrested each year for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
California Drunk Driving Accident Statistics
California, being one of the most populous states with an extensive network of roads, faces significant challenges regarding DUI.
According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), more than 125,000 arrests were made for DUI in 2023, averaging about 340 DUI arrests per day.
A significant spike in DUI incidents was noted during the “Memorial Day weekend,” with over 1,100 arrests made from Friday, May 24 to Monday, May 27, during a safety operation.
Additionally, around 19,000 citations were issued for speeding during this period.
Despite sobriety patrol programs and awareness campaigns, California remains one of the riskiest states for driving, especially concerning DUI.
According to the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were around 853 deaths and 27,000 incidents combining both fatalities and severe injuries due to DUI.
These alarming numbers highlight the urgent need for stricter measures and educational programs to reduce DUI incidence. A collective commitment to safer roads is essential.

What Happens When You Drink and Drive?
Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs has severe consequences, both legally and in terms of safety and health. When you drink and drive:
- Your ability to react quickly to road situations diminishes.
- Your motor coordination is reduced, making simple tasks like turning the wheel difficult.
- Your judgment is severely impaired, leading to dangerous decisions like speeding.
- Alcohol can cause blurry or double vision.
All these factors can lead to catastrophic accidents, endangering not only your life but also the lives of your passengers and others on the road.
