Pacific Coast Highway Fatal Crash Kills Malibu Chef

Los Angeles County, California — A Pacific Coast Highway fatal crash near Carbon Canyon Road killed longtime Nobu Malibu chef Ryo Uchimiya after a teenage driver reportedly struck his parked vehicle. The October 3 collision remains under investigation as authorities review what caused the SUV to leave the travel lane.

Authorities Investigate Fatal Collision Near Carbon Canyon Road

The fatal crash on Pacific Coast Highway occurred around 7 a.m. near the 22600 block of PCH, where 51-year-old Uchimiya was inside a parked vehicle. Authorities said an SUV driven by a 16-year-old crossed the roadway’s fog line and struck his car.

The impact pushed Uchimiya’s vehicle into other parked cars, creating a chain-reaction collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later determined that he died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Reports indicate the SUV was traveling at least 50 mph before the impact. Investigators have not publicly determined why the vehicle left the travel lane, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

What California Law May Mean After a Fatal Roadway Crash

A serious collision can lead to a separate civil review even while authorities determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. California’s Basic Speed Law requires motorists to travel at a reasonable and prudent speed based on traffic, visibility, roadway conditions, and other circumstances.

For families affected by a fatal crash, a potential wrongful death claim may examine:

  • Whether a driver acted negligently, including through unsafe speed or loss of lane control.
  • Whether that conduct was a substantial factor in causing the death.
  • Available damages, which may include lost financial support, funeral expenses, and certain noneconomic losses.

Liability and recoverable damages depend on the evidence and facts of each case.
