The fatal incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on Sunday in the eastbound lanes of SR-78 near Mar Vista. According to CHP, the children were inside a green GMC Yukon, which had pulled over onto the right shoulder.
According to the Vista Fire Department, the vehicle’s driver, who turned out to be the mother of the children, had stopped on the road because the car’s luggage had fallen off. The children got out of the vehicle to retrieve the luggage but were tragically struck by an approaching vehicle.
CHP stated that the children “were walking in the eastbound traffic lanes of SR-78” when they were hit by a white Nissan Sentra traveling east in the number 3 lane. The 41-year-old driver of the Sentra remained at the scene of the accident.
CHP officers reported that the Yukon’s driver, identified as 33-year-old Sandra Ortiz from Vista, was arrested “on felony charges related to this incident, including driving under the influence (DUI), gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and child endangerment.”
