In a tragic event in South Los Angeles’ Central-Alameda neighborhood on Monday, two lives were taken while three more people faced injury due to a collision between an automobile and the Metro Blue Line train.
When the firefighters arrived at 1629 E. 24th St., they found five men in a car, two of them confined to the backseat. Emergency services were successful in freeing both individuals; however, one was already deceased and another had passed away on-site despite their critical condition.
Lucky to have survived, the three survivors including the driver were able to exit the vehicle on their own and were quickly taken away for medical attention with reported “fair-to-moderate” conditions.
Sergeant Hector Guzman of the Los Angeles Police Department reported that early findings imply the car made a left turn in front of the oncoming southbound train, leading to a terrible crash. Moreover, officials mentioned both vehicles were directed toward the south when the incident occurred. Authorities are trying to figure out if any alerts had been sent off by railroad signal equipment at the time of impact.
At the time of the incident, approximately 125 passengers were on board and managed to exit safely without any medical concerns. The two train operators also exited successfully, one being assessed out of an abundance of caution.
On Monday, the blue line was disrupted twice — the first incident saw an individual get hit but luckily only sustained a leg injury. The second disruption occurred later in the day on the same track in downtown L.A.
As a result of the Blue Line train crash, buses will replace trains traveling between Washington and Vernon stations. L.A. Metro anticipates bus shuttles to continuously run until nightfall.
