Self-Driving Google Car Incident in San Francisco Raises Concerns Over Robotaxi Rollout

(San Francisco, CA) During a test drive on May 21, a self-driving car operated by Waymo struck and fatally injured a small dog. Although a test driver was present in the driver’s seat, the vehicle was in autonomous mode at the time of the accident, as stated in the online DMV report. Regrettably, the dog did not survive the collision, and the autonomous vehicle sustained minor damage.

The self-driving Google car incident in San Francisco highlights the challenges and risks associated with autonomous vehicles.

A spokesperson from Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., acknowledged the crash and confirmed that the autonomous driving system correctly identified the dog but was unable to avoid contact. Waymo expressed its commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly, emphasizing the importance of community trust and safety. The company extended its condolences to the unidentified owner of the dog.

The accident has amplified concerns surrounding the California Public Utilities Commission’s impending approval of self-driving robotaxis operating 24 hours a day in San Francisco.

According to reports, the number of incidents involving autonomous vehicles in the city has more than tripled from 24 in January to 93 in March, based on city-data. April witnessed 87 reported incidents, indicating an alarming trend.

Instances of self-driving vehicle mishaps have raised additional red flags. In one incident, a driverless Cruise car breached police tape near a major house fire, requiring intervention from firefighters to bring it to a halt. Similarly, a Waymo car ventured into an active construction site, only stopping at the edge of an open trench with workers present. These cases underscore the potential dangers associated with autonomous vehicles.

Local officials, alarmed by the reported incidents, argue that these cases likely represent only a fraction of the total number of occurrences. The rise in accidents, near-misses, and other safety-related issues demands a comprehensive examination of the risks posed by self-driving vehicles. It is imperative to address these concerns before expanding the deployment of autonomous robotaxis.

The recent incident involving a self-driving Google car and the unfortunate demise of a small dog during a test drive in San Francisco have ignited apprehensions regarding the future rollout of ride-sharing robotaxis. Waymo’s acknowledgment of the accident and commitment to investigating the matter underscores the significance of community trust and safety. As the California Public Utilities Commission considers granting approval for 24/7 operation of self-driving robotaxis, it is crucial to address the escalating concerns and thoroughly evaluate the potential risks associated with autonomous vehicles.

Technology is opening up new transportation opportunities, but at the same time, accidents are on the rise. Even when we think we are safe, an accident like this could change everything.
