South LA Hit-and-Run Accident Kills One, Driver Sought

Los Angeles, California — A fatal South LA hit-and-run accident left one person dead in the Florence neighborhood late Saturday night. Los Angeles police are searching for the driver of a gray pickup truck who reportedly fled the scene following the collision.

Police Investigate Fatal Hit-and-Run Near Avalon Boulevard

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the collision was reported around 11:33 p.m. near East 68th Street and Avalon Boulevard in South Los Angeles.

Authorities confirmed that one person died but did not immediately disclose the victim’s identity or other identifying details.

Investigators described the suspected vehicle as a gray pickup truck. Reports shared through the Citizen app indicated that witnesses believed it was a gray Ford pickup last seen heading westbound. Police have not confirmed the vehicle’s make or model.

Officers temporarily closed Avalon Boulevard between 68th and 70th streets to examine the scene and collect evidence.

No arrests or suspect details were immediately announced. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities encourage anyone with relevant information to contact the LAPD.

Under California Vehicle Code Section 20001, drivers involved in collisions causing injury or death must stop, provide required information, and fulfill applicable assistance obligations.

Following a fatal hit-and-run accident, surviving relatives may have legal options if another party’s negligence caused the death.

Important considerations include:

  • Wrongful death claims: Eligible family members may seek compensation for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and other recoverable losses.
  • Evidence preservation: Surveillance footage, witness statements, and vehicle debris may help establish liability.
  • Insurance coverage: Uninsured motorist coverage may provide benefits in qualifying hit-and-run cases, subject to policy terms.
  • Filing deadlines: California generally allows two years to file wrongful death lawsuits, although exceptions may apply.

Leaving the scene does not automatically establish responsibility for causing the collision.

Losing a loved one in a hit-and-run collision can create emotional and financial challenges, particularly when the responsible driver remains unidentified.
