Runaway Tire Linked to Fatal 405 Freeway Motorcycle Accident

Los Angeles, California – A 405 Freeway motorcycle accident has prompted a California Highway Patrol investigation after dashcam footage appeared to show a loose tire crossing the freeway moments before a motorcyclist was fatally struck. Authorities are now trying to determine where the tire came from and whether another vehicle was involved in the sequence of events.

Loose Tire Investigated in Fatal Los Angeles Freeway Crash

The crash happened around 11:20 a.m. on August 26, 2026, on the southbound 405 Freeway just north of the 101 Freeway interchange in Los Angeles. Investigators initially understood that motorcyclist Gary Minor had fallen from his motorcycle before entering the path of a white Toyota SUV.

Later, Tesla dashcam footage showed a loose tire bouncing from the northbound side of the freeway, crossing the center divider, and entering the southbound HOV lane shortly before Minor fell from his motorcycle. The Toyota driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

CHP had not located the tire as of Thursday and is seeking additional footage or information that could identify its source.

How a Loose Tire Could Affect a California Injury Claim

A 405 Freeway motorcycle accident involving a detached tire can raise complex liability questions. Investigators may examine whether the tire separated due to improper maintenance, defective components, negligent installation, or an unsecured load.

Depending on the evidence, a claim may involve:

  • The owner or operator of the vehicle that lost the tire
  • A repair shop or mechanic responsible for improper installation
  • Another party responsible for unsafe maintenance or defective equipment
  • Available insurance coverage connected to the responsible vehicle

California negligence claims generally require evidence connecting another party’s conduct to the resulting injury or death. For many wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits, California Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1 provides a 2-year filing period, although exceptions can affect the deadline.
