According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday on Highway 99, just north of Seventh Standard Road in Bakersfield. Investigators said a Honda Accord was traveling northbound in a southbound lane before colliding with a BMW and a Chevrolet.
The Honda caught fire following the impact. All three people inside the Honda were pronounced dead from injuries associated with the fire, CHP reported.
Two occupants of the BMW sustained major injuries, while two people in the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries. Authorities have not announced whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. The circumstances leading to the wrong-way travel remain under investigation.
