San Diego, California ā An I-15 fatal crash claimed the life of a man who was helping his daughter with a disabled vehicle early Monday morning. The multi-vehicle collision near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard also injured two drivers and forced the closure of northbound freeway lanes for several hours.
Father Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-15 in San Diego
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. Monday on the northbound Interstate 15 near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
A woman traveling with several children had stopped in the center divider after her vehicle became disabled. She contacted her father, a man in his 60s, who arrived in a minivan to assist.
While he was helping, a Toyota Corolla struck the driver’s side of his minivan, fatally injuring him. Another vehicle subsequently rear-ended the Corolla, and a fifth vehicle then sideswiped one of the involved cars.
Two drivers were hospitalized with injuries, while the woman and children were unharmed. CHP investigated the minivan’s positioning as debris prompted an extended northbound closure.
California Laws and Legal Claims Following a Fatal Freeway Collision
An I-15 fatal crash involving multiple vehicles may raise questions about negligence, liability, and compensation. Under California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60, certain surviving family members may pursue wrongful death claims if another party’s wrongful actions or negligence cause a fatality.
Important legal considerations include:
- Driver negligence: Speeding, distraction, or failure to maintain a safe lookout may contribute to liability.
- Wrongful death claims: Eligible relatives may seek compensation for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and loss of companionship.
- Multiple-vehicle liability: Investigators may evaluate whether more than one driver’s actions contributed to the collision.
- Filing deadlines: California generally allows two years to file personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits, although exceptions may apply.
Liability depends on the evidence and circumstances surrounding each collision.
