Highway 99 DUI Accident Involves Pickup and Freightliner

Bakersfield, California — A Highway 99 DUI accident near California Avenue caused significant traffic delays and left a pickup passenger trapped on Monday afternoon. Authorities arrested the pickup driver on suspicion of felony DUI, while emergency crews assisted the injured passenger.

Pickup Strikes Parked Trailer on Highway 99 in Bakersfield

California Highway Patrol officers responded at about 3:49 p.m. on July 20 to the southbound Highway 99 at California Avenue. Investigators said a Dodge pickup towing a trailer was traveling in the No. 4 lane north of the interchange. Farther south, a white Freightliner and trailer were parked on the west shoulder.

The Dodge moved onto the shoulder and struck the Freightliner’s trailer. The pickup became lodged underneath it, trapping the right-front passenger. Emergency personnel freed the passenger and transported them to a hospital for evaluation.

No one in the Freightliner was reported injured. CHP arrested the Dodge driver on suspicion of felony DUI and booked the driver into Kern County Jail. Witnesses may contact CHP Bakersfield at 661-396-6600.

How California Law May Affect an Injury Claim

A DUI arrest does not, by itself, establish civil liability, but evidence from the investigation may affect an injury claim. California Vehicle Code Section 23153 prohibits impaired driving when an unlawful act or a neglected driving duty causes injury to another person.

Potentially important evidence may include:

  • The CHP collision report and any chemical-test results
  • Photographs, video, witness statements, and vehicle damage
  • Records showing treatment, lost income, and other accident-related losses

An injured passenger may seek compensation from one or more responsible parties, depending on the facts and available insurance.

Most California personal injury lawsuits must be filed within two years, though exceptions may extend the deadline. Prompt preservation of evidence is especially important when a commercial truck or trailer is involved.
