The crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m. near the 1400 block of Fiesta Island Road. According to San Diego police, a 38-year-old man was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger on the sand between the shoreline and the paved roadway with two adult female passengers.

Investigators said the driver was accelerating and making abrupt turns when the truck lost traction and rolled over.

All three occupants were transported for medical care. Police reported that the driver suffered a brain bleed and multiple spinal fractures. A 21-year-old passenger sustained a fractured shoulder blade and several spinal fractures, while a 23-year-old passenger avoided serious injuries.

The SDPD Traffic Division is investigating the Fiesta Island rollover crash. Authorities said alcohol impairment was not considered a factor.

What Injured Passengers Should Know About California Injury Claims

A serious rollover can raise questions about whether a driver’s actions contributed to passenger injuries. Under California Civil Code § 1714, people are generally liable for injuries resulting from their failure to exercise ordinary care.

An injured passenger may potentially pursue compensation when negligence contributed to the collision. Depending on the circumstances, recoverable losses may include medical expenses, lost income, future treatment needs, and emotional harm.

Evidence that may be important includes:

  • Police and collision reports
  • Photos or videos from the scene
  • Witness statements
  • Medical records and treatment bills
  • Evidence showing how the vehicle was being operated

California personal injury lawsuits are generally subject to a two-year filing deadline, although exceptions may apply.
