Fresno County, California — A car accident in Fresno County near Millerton Lake killed an elderly woman and left four others seriously injured, who were hospitalized. The collision occurred after one vehicle reportedly entered the intersection without stopping.
Fatal Collision Reported Near Millerton Lake
California Highway Patrol officers arrived just before 1 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Auberry Road and Old Millerton Road near Millerton Lake. Investigators said an 18-year-old woman from Clovis was driving a Toyota sedan toward the intersection when she failed to stop at the stop sign.
The Toyota collided with a Nissan sedan driven by an 88-year-old man from Prather, causing both vehicles to hit a nearby embankment. An elderly female passenger in the Nissan was declared dead at the scene.
The Nissan driver and two other passengers were hospitalized with moderate to major injuries. The Toyota driver was also hospitalized with major injuries. Authorities continue their investigation, although drugs and alcohol are not currently believed to be factors.
Legal Considerations After a Serious Intersection Crash
After a serious collision, investigators and insurers assess whether each driver complied with traffic laws and exercised reasonable care.
California Vehicle Code Section 22450 requires drivers to stop at posted stop signs before entering an intersection. A violation may support a negligence claim, but fault ultimately depends on the full investigation and available evidence.
Injured people and surviving family members may need to preserve:
- The CHP collision report and photographs
- Witness names and contact information
- Medical records, bills, and wage-loss documents
- Insurance letters and vehicle-damage estimates
A personal injury claim may seek compensation for injury-related losses, while eligible relatives may file a wrongful death claim after a fatal crash.
