Maui Residents Prepare for Restricted Zone Re-entry

In the aftermath of the destructive Maui wildfire that wreaked havoc on numerous properties, the County of Maui is finally readying to permit residents and business owners to re-enter the restricted disaster zone starting the week of September 25.

According to Darryl Oliveira, Interim MEMA administrator, residents will be notified zone-wise, and upon verification of their residency, they will be briefed on protocols before entering the burn zone. This phased approach will prioritize the safety of residents, ensuring they wear personal protection equipment, which will be furnished to them. The re-entry is set to benefit over 2,000 properties, with 464 already cleared by the EPA as disclosed in a recent news conference.

Understanding the immense emotional toll this catastrophe has taken on its victims, mental health professionals will accompany residents to support them during their initial visits. Oliveira empathetically stated, “It is overwhelming to see the devastation, so part of our process is supporting family members… to prepare them for what to experience.”

For practical assistance, residents will also be escorted to discern property boundaries, which became ambiguous due to the extensive damage. This process is not just to salvage personal belongings but to also expedite insurance assessments; property owners can be accompanied by insurance adjusters during visits.

However, residents with respiratory issues or the elderly are advised against entering due to the potential health risks posed by harmful toxins.

The wildfire, which commenced on August 8, resulted in the shutting down of large parts of Lahaina. Though certain business areas like Lahaina Cannery Mall reopened recently, the calamity led to the obliteration of numerous establishments, including the new Kaiāulu o Kupuohi apartment complex.
