Lahaina’s Unending Blaze Mystery: The Quest for the Missing Continues

The devastating wildfires in Maui’s Lahaina community are still unveiling their grim aftermath. Weeks into the disaster, the death toll has now reached 115, with the discovery of three more victims on Tuesday. Despite the comprehensive efforts of over 400 individuals searching for the missing, it remains uncertain how many are yet to be accounted for.

The three victims identified were Lāhainā residents Joseph Lara (86), Gwendolyn Puou (83), and Edward Sato (76). While 48 families have received notifications, six remain unreachable.

Shifting from search and recovery, the focus is now on hazardous material removal. This move is essential before residents and businesses can return to the affected areas. During this phase, there’s a concerted effort to respect the cultural significance of Lāhainā. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s incident commander, Steve Calanog, highlighted the involvement of 25 cultural observers in their team, emphasizing the commitment to proceed with respect and care.

As the cleanup progresses, hazardous materials like solvents and paints will be meticulously removed. The air quality is being monitored for potential hazardous particles due to fire damage.

Darryl Oliveira, of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, aptly named the next phase the “Return to Lahaina” phase. Their main objective is to enable residents to return home safely.

Even with these recovery efforts, searches continue, especially off the Lāhainā coast. Expert divers and an FBI team are scouting the waters for belongings that might help identify more victims.

Maui Police Chief, John Pelletier, confirmed the release of an updated missing persons list on September 1. Despite the 110 missing persons reports filed, he acknowledged discrepancies in the numbers.
