July 4th and the Risks Associated with Negligent Driving

CALIFORNIA – With one of the most significant celebrations for our country around the corner, California authorities are also preparing for the chaos and dangers that this festivity represents.

Unfortunately, negligent driving is a frequent factor in fatal accidents that occur during the 4th of July celebrations. While commemorating our freedom is the main reason for this holiday, this spirit of liberation often leads us to put our own lives and the lives of others at risk.

Let’s analyze the statistics:

  • More than 1,200 drivers under the influence of alcohol were removed from the roads, and almost 70 people lost their lives during the July 4th weekend in 2023 in California.
  • The California Highway Patrol conducted a Maximum Enforcement Period from 6:01 p.m. on June 30, 2023, until 11:59 p.m. on July 4. During this period, 68 people died in traffic accidents, and almost half of the victims were not wearing seat belts.
  • In the same timeframe, the Highway Patrol made 1,224 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, which averages to approximately one DUI arrest every five minutes. Additionally, over 9,700 speeding tickets were issued.
  • In 2022, during the July 4th holiday period, 487 people died in traffic accidents, of which 40% (196) were related to driving under the influence of alcohol. Of those who died in these accidents, 27% involved a driver or motorcyclist with a blood alcohol concentration of .15 g/dL or higher, nearly double the legal limit in most states.
  • Between 2018 and 2022, 2,228 deaths were recorded from traffic accidents during the July 4th weekend. Of these deaths, 1,414 were drivers, and 39% (545) of these drivers were drunk. The age group of 21 to 34 years had the highest percentage (50%) of drunk drivers.

Safety Tips

To stay safe during the July 4th celebrations, consider these safety tips:

  1. Plan Ahead: If you plan to drink, arrange a safe way to get home. Use ride-sharing services and taxis, or designate a sober driver.
  2. Always Wear a Seatbelt: Ensure all vehicle occupants always wear their seat belts.
  3. Avoid Distractions: Do not use your phone or other devices while driving. Keep your attention on the road.
  4. Observe Speed Limits: Drive within the established speed limits and adjust your speed according to traffic and weather conditions.
  5. Be a Defensive Driver: Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and stay alert to the actions of other drivers.
  6. Don’t Drive Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs: Drugs and alcohol, can impair your ability to drive safely.
  7. Rest Well Before Driving: Fatigue can be as dangerous as alcohol when driving. Ensure you are well-rested before driving long distances.

Driving under the influence of alcohol remains a significant issue in California, particularly during festive periods such as the July 4th weekend.

The alarming statistics highlight the urgent need to increase awareness and promote more responsible behavior on the roads. The California Highway Patrol is dedicated to intensifying its efforts to ensure road safety and reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the state’s highways.

It is crucial that every driver takes responsibility and contributes to creating a safer driving environment for everyone.
