The trial between Gwyneth Paltrow and retired optometrist Terry Sanderson has become increasingly personal as Sanderson’s two daughters, Polly Grasham and Shae Herath, are expected to testify on Thursday about the lasting effects of their father and Paltrow’s 2016 ski collision.
Sanderson is suing Paltrow for $300,000, claiming she recklessly crashed into him while skiing at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah and caused him to suffer broken ribs and lasting brain damage.
During the trial’s first two days, attorneys and medical witnesses have described how Sanderson’s injuries were likely caused by someone crashing into him from behind, and how his mental acuity has suffered as a result of those injuries. Paltrow’s attorneys have attempted to portray Sanderson as a 76-year-old whose decline followed a normal course of aging rather than being caused by the collision.
Neurologist Richard Boehme and Paltrow herself may be called to testify on Thursday or Friday. Paltrow’s attorneys have not yet called witnesses, but have stated their intention to call Paltrow’s husband, Brad Falchuk, and their two children, Moses and Apple.
Attorneys for Paltrow have accused Sanderson of exploiting Paltrow’s wealth and celebrity by suing her, and have attempted to discredit testimony from Sanderson’s experts. They are expected to question Sanderson’s daughters about their father’s mention of Paltrow’s fame and an email alluding to footage recorded on a GoPro camera that has not been included in evidence.
While the amount of money at stake for both sides is relatively small, the Gwyneth Paltrow ski trial‘s legal costs are likely to be significant due to its multi-year duration and heavy reliance on expert witnesses.
