Gonzales, CA – Authorities are investigating a fatal Monterey County crash that left a 49-year-old driver dead on Highway 101 on Saturday. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that the accident, involving five vehicles, occurred around 11:45 a.m. near Gloria Road, prompting the closure of both southbound lanes for several hours.
According to the CHP, a 16-year-old driver from Salinas was driving a 2021 Chevrolet 2500 towing a trailer when it collided with a Chevrolet Colorado in front of it. The force of the impact caused the Colorado to lose control and overturn.
The driver of the Colorado, a 49-year-old Salinas resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was transported to Natividad Medical Center for treatment of injuries. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for further identification of the deceased.
The initial collision caused a chain reaction, leading to crashes involving three other vehicles: a white Honda Accord, a white Chevrolet 2500, and a maroon Toyota Sienna. Fortunately, none of the occupants in these vehicles sustained injuries.
This devastating Monterey County crash serves as a somber reminder of how quickly accidents can escalate, particularly on busy highways. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the victim, and we hope for the full recovery of the injured passenger.
