SAN DIEGO — The California Highway Patrol reported a tragic incident on a highway near the United States-Mexico border, which resulted in the loss of life on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred shortly before noon on the southbound Interstate 805, near Camino De La Plaza, the last U.S. exit before entering Mexico.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s Traffic Incident Information Page, an eyewitness reported seeing a white sedan heading towards the port of entry, make a U-turn on the highway, and collide violently with a Honda minivan.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the driver of the white sedan, an Audi, was driving in the wrong direction at the time of the crash, colliding head-on with the minivan. “Our understanding at this time is that they turned around at the entry point and came in the wrong direction,” said Sergeant Hope Maxson of the California Highway Patrol.
Apparently, the driver may have missed the last U.S. exit and started driving in the wrong direction on I-805. Unfortunately, the minivan driver died as a result of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim.
It is essential for all drivers to be aware of their surroundings and pay attention to traffic signs and navigation instructions. Lack of attention can lead to dangerous maneuvers and endanger the lives of vehicle occupants and other road users.
Accidents like this fatal accident near United States-Mexico border are preventable tragedies. Responsible driving is a shared responsibility that all drivers must take on to protect their own lives and the lives of others on the roads.
