CAMARILLO, CALIFORNIA – A massive accident involving 11 vehicles on Highway 101, near the Camarillo Springs Road exit, resulted from a drunk driver traveling in the wrong direction, according to authorities.
The California Highway Patrol initially responded to reports of a wrong-way driver on the northbound lanes of Highway 101, coming from Camarillo, around 12:05 a.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024.
The vehicle involved, a 2008 Honda Civic, quickly caused a chain reaction crash, colliding head-on with several other vehicles, as per information provided by the CHP.
The first affected vehicle, a 2016 Honda Civic, sustained significant damage, and its sole occupant had to be rescued before being transported to Los Robles Hospital.
The individual responsible for the crash, identified as 24-year-old Luis Ocampo Cardoso, a resident of Santa Barbara, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the accident.
The affected section of northbound Highway 101 remained closed for nearly three hours while the relevant investigation was conducted, as indicated by police authorities.
It is still unknown where Cardoso entered the highway and the distance traveled before the crash, aspects that are being investigated by the appropriate authorities.
