California — Authorities have identified the driver killed in a tragic crash on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Village as 19-year-old Asher Linden Tenud. The fatal collision occurred Tuesday morning just south of Constellation Road around 10 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Tenud, driving a green 1998 Jaguar XJR southbound, lost control on a curve, veered across the dirt median, and collided head-on with a gray 2007 Honda Odyssey traveling north. Tenud, a Portland native residing in Santa Maria, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Honda’s driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities have not released the individual’s name or an update on their condition as of Thursday.
Buellton Area CHP Commander Lt. Jason Bronson described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy for the victims and their families, especially during what is meant to be a season of joy. He urged all drivers to slow down and exercise caution, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
This tragic crash highlights an alarming trend. CHP records show 33 crashes near Constellation Road this year, 25 of which occurred during wet weather—more than double the number of crashes reported in 2022. Officers are collaborating with Caltrans to enhance safety measures in the area.
