BURBANK, California – A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in Monterey County, where a Burbank musician lost his life while cycling back home after a month-long charity trip.
Roy Wiegand, a renowned professional trumpeter, was known for his passion for running and cycling long distances in support of his favorite causes. Unfortunately, on Saturday, July 29, during the final stage of a 2,500-mile journey, Wiegand was rear-ended by a pickup truck near Salinas, resulting in his death at the scene of the accident.
His fellow cyclist, Chris Haller, was also heading home that day. “When the accident happened, he was ahead of me, and I had already decided to take the bus back to Los Angeles because he was going very fast,” Haller said.
The California Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the Burbank musician’s bicycle accident.
Roy Wiegand lost his life while raising funds for the Navajo Water Project, as part of what he called “Roy’s Journey.” His 2,500-mile bike journey aimed to raise $25,000 to bring clean running water and solar power to homes in the Navajo Nation. However, Wiegand exceeded expectations, managing to raise over $28,000.
The departure of Roy Wiegand is a painful loss for the Burbank community and beyond. However, his legacy will endure through his music and his benevolent spirit.
