The couple had just shared one of the best days of their lives with family and friends, leaving their wedding venue with hopes of starting a new life together, but their dreams were shattered by the tragic actions of a drunk driver.
Bride dies on wedding day, and the groom suffered severe injuries. Samantha Miller, a 34-year-old resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, lost her life while leaving the reception in a golf cart with her husband, Aric Hutchinson, who is now hospitalized.
Hutchinson’s family created a GoFundMe page to collect money to help with hospital and funeral costs for Miller. In a statement on the same page, Hutchinson’s mother wrote, “I hold my son’s wedding ring in a plastic bag, thinking that just five hours earlier, Sam placed it on his finger as they read their vows. Aric has lost the love of his life.”
She also mentioned that her son had undergone reconstructive surgery and faced a long road to recovery. As of Tuesday morning, the page had raised over $385,000 to support the bride and her family.
The fatal accident occurred at 10 p.m. on Folly Beach, according to reports from investigators on the case. Data recovered from the rental car that the drunk driver, identified as 25-year-old Jamie Lee Komoroski, was driving indicated that she was traveling at 65 mph and only briefly hit the brakes before crashing into the golf cart carrying the newlyweds.
Komoroski was charged with reckless homicide and three counts of felony DUI. The passengers in the car she was driving at the time of the DUI accident were also hospitalized.
