Bottleneck on Highway 101; Tragic Death of Driver [Oxnard, CA]

Oxnard, California – In the early hours of Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was forced to close sections of northbound Highway 101 in the town of Oxnard. The reason for this intervention was the discovery of an unconscious 57-year-old man, who was behind the wheel of an SUV that had come to a stop in the highway’s center divider.

Despite the efforts of emergency medical teams, the driver tragically lost his life less than an hour after being found, as reported by CHP authorities in a press release.

The incident in question, along with several subsequent collisions, resulted in a significant bottleneck on Highway 101 during the early hours of Tuesday.

The CHP’s Ventura Office received reports of a vehicle partially obstructing traffic just north of Rose Avenue, around 4:55 a.m. Officers quickly responded to the call and found the man trapped in a 2014 black Chevrolet Equinox. What was surprising was that the vehicle’s transmission was still in gear, as reported by the agency.

Officers took immediate action, breaking the front passenger-side window to access the driver. They began providing medical care immediately while waiting for the arrival of firefighters. However, despite desperate efforts to save his life, the man was pronounced dead at the scene around 5:45 a.m.

CHP officers determined that the SUV had not crashed, and there were no suspicions of any illegal activity.

Personnel from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene. The medical examiner will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause and manner of death. At this time, the man’s name has not been released as family notification is pending. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
