Pat Casey, a BMX star and medalist of the X Games, tragically lost his life on Tuesday afternoon in an accident while practicing motocross.
According to reports from the San Diego County Coroner’s Office, the 29-year-old was attempting a stunt at the Slayground Motorcross Park, a private track in Ramona, California, when he lost control and fell from his bike. Paramedics found Casey without a pulse and were unable to revive him.
In a statement, authorities mentioned that officers and paramedics attempted resuscitation measures. However, Casey was pronounced dead at the scene. They also added that the investigation into how Casey’s accident occurred was ongoing.
Casey resided in Riverside, California, with his wife Chase and their two children, 8-year-old Reid and 7-year-old Tatum. “The world lost one of the greatest,” wrote fellow BMX professional rider T.J. Lavin in a tribute to Casey on Instagram.
Casey won the gold medal in BMX Dirt and the silver medal in BMX Park at the 2021 X Games, and he also earned medals at the 2012 X Games (bronze in BMX Park). He placed fifth in BMX Park Best Trick and ninth in BMX Park at the X Games in Japan in May. It is highly likely that he would have competed in the upcoming X Games events in California in July.
