POLLOCK PINES, Calif. — A van driven by a man struck five children at a crosswalk, resulting in four of them being airlifted to hospitals, while the fifth child was transported by ground, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident occurred at approximately 10:42 a.m. at the marked crosswalk located on Pony Express Trail near Oak Street, where no stoplights or stop signs were present.
The owner of the strip mall on that street, which houses a Montessori school, confirmed that all the affected children were students at the school. The Montessori school caters to students up to the age of 6.
On Thursday morning, Pine Top Montessori issued a statement addressing the tragic accident in Pollock Pines. They emphasized their commitment to the well-being of every child in their care and regarded their students as part of their extended family. The statement conveyed heartfelt wishes for the families’ recovery and assured close coordination with authorities and parents to handle the situation. In the interest of all children’s safety, they kindly requested that only parents and their children visit the facility.
The driver of the Ford E-150, a 21-year-old individual, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, as stated by the CHP. Currently, there is no suspicion of alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed as contributing factors to the crash.
CHP representative Andrew Burnett mentioned that investigators are examining whether distracted driving played a role in the incident. The vehicle involved in the collision was described as an appliance repair van.
A boy and a girl were taken to UC Davis Medical Center suffering from major injuries, while a boy and another girl were taken to the Marshall Medical Center with minor injuries.
At this moment, no charges have been filed.
