(Sunnyvale, CA) Three people died in a multiple car collision on Sunnyvale‘s Highway 101, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. this Monday.
According to a report from the San Jose Highway Patrol, a single-vehicle crash was initially reported in the center divider between Lawrence Expressway and north of Fair Oaks Boulevard.
This crash triggered a chain reaction, causing several following vehicles to collide continuously and resulting in a multiple-car collision on the highway.
Three victims lost their lives, identified as occupants of the second and third vehicles involved in the collision. A total of seven vehicles were involved in the incident.
Both the southeast and northwest lanes remained closed throughout Monday morning. A detour has been established to ensure traffic flow on Fair Oaks Boulevard. The southbound lane also experienced a multi-vehicle collision after a body was ejected from the northbound-to-southbound direction of the highway.
At this time, it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a significant role in the accident. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with relevant information regarding the accident to come forward immediately.
Highway accidents, especially those involving multiple vehicles, are more common than we might think. It is our responsibility as drivers to always remain vigilant and ensure the safety of ourselves and others on the road.
