(Los Angeles, CA) A wrong-way driver on the southbound lanes of Highway 101 at Santa Monica Boulevard caused a collision that left several people injured and one person dead early Monday morning.
The accident occurred at 4 a.m. with at least three vehicles involved, and two of them caught fire, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol. A driver who was driving the wrong way in his Toyota Prius was declared dead at the scene of the accident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver had entered the highway in the southbound direction at Alvarado Street, several miles south of where the collision occurred. Authorities indicate that the first impact was a side collision, which was received by a Honda. The Toyota subsequently collided with a pickup truck, which resulted in a major head-on collision.
An alert was issued about the accident and the lanes were closed at Melrose Avenue for clean-up and accident investigation. The northbound lanes were also affected by debris on the roadway.
One lane was reopened around 5:15 a.m. while other lanes remained closed for several hours during the investigation.
At this time, alcohol or drugs are not believed to be major factors in the collision. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims.
The multi-vehicle accident on Highway 101 highlights the dangers of reckless driving and how the negligent acts of one driver can lead to catastrophic consequences not only for themselves but also for other drivers.
